How to Prepare For Your Virtual ST3 Interview ?

The Essential Preparation Guide

Preparing for an online interview can be challenging, especially when aiming to make the best impression. You have a brief period of time to impress your interviewers and be able to secure your dream ST3 job.

Hereโ€™s a comprehensive checklist to help you set up your tech and environment for a smooth and professional ENT ST3 interview.

1. Device & Internet Connection

  • Device: Aim for a reliable device that will allow you to load up and run the latest version of Microsoft Teams without issue. I would also have a spare device available nearby in case a disaster happens. (I used my sisters laptop as a back-up device)
  • Stable Connection: Aim for a reliable internet connection with a minimum speed of 20 Mbps for upload and download. For added stability, consider using an Ethernet cable rather than Wi-Fi.

2. Microphone

  • Clear Audio: Good audio is essential. You do not want to unnecessarily repeat yourself in the limited time window you have.
  • Built-in laptop microphones may not provide clear sound, so using a dedicated microphone or headset can make a big difference.
  • It is worth trying them ahead of time and making sure you are comfortable changing the microphone input on teams and dealing with any problems that may arise.

3. Webcam

  • High-Quality Video: If your laptopโ€™s webcam is low-resolution, investing in a separate high-definition webcam is worthwhile. A quality webcam provides clearer video and usually adjusts better to varying light conditions.
  • I would ensure you have at least 720p definition but would likely recommend a 1080p or 4k camera.

4. Lighting

  • Even Lighting: Proper lighting is essential to avoid shadows and to illuminate your face. Ideally, place a single light source level or just above your face to ensure there are no shadows.
  • Most candidates invest in a LED light panel or a ring light. I prefer a light panel to avoid the ring glare you see in people's eyes. Ensure the light is not too bright, leaving you over-exposed.

5. Camera Positioning and Framing

  • Eye-Level Framing: Position your webcam at eye level to simulate natural eye contact. Avoid placing the camera too high or low; instead, align it to centre your face.
  • Framing Tips: Frame yourself so your head and shoulders are visible, with a bit of space above your head. This framing is professional and engaging.

6. Backdrop

  • Clutter-Free Background: A neutral, uncluttered background minimises distractions. If your home setup is busy, a simple backdrop behind you or a virtual background can help keep the focus on you.
  • Most people would go for a neutral colour backdrop - I went for a white blank wall, as to avoid any distractions from what you're saying.

7. Dress Professionally

  • Treat the online interview as seriously as an in-person one. Dress professionally from head to toe to help maintain a professional mindset and avoid any mishaps if you need to stand up.
  • I wore a suit for the interview.

8. Test Your Setup in Advance

  • Trial Run on Teams: Before interview day, do a test call on Microsoft Teams with a friend or colleague to confirm all equipment works properly. Check sound, video quality, and lighting adjustments.
  • Check for Updates: Ensure Microsoft Teams and your deviceโ€™s operating system are fully updated to avoid compatibility issues.
  • I actually ended up doing the last few weeks of interview prep using my set up and so if any issues cropped up, I'd be able to deal with them.

9. Prepare for Power / Device Backup

  • Battery and Power Supply: If possible, plug your device in during the interview to avoid unexpected power issues. Also, have any backup device or hotspot ready, just in case.

Interview Day Checklist

  1. Internet: Test connection; use Ethernet if possible.
  2. Microphone: Test sound clarity.
  3. Webcam: Adjust to eye-level framing.
  4. Lighting: Set up in front, avoid backlighting.
  5. Background: Keep it simple and professional.
  6. Attire: Dress professionally from head to toe.
  7. Run a Test: Do a final check on Teams the day before.

By following this setup guide, youโ€™ll ensure a professional, reliable environment that allows your skills and personality to shine.

Best of luck in your ENT ST3 interview!
